Sedona Arizona Real Estate and Community: Sedona Locals Campaign For National Scenic Area Designation

Sedona is beautiful and is known worldwide as a great destination for a vacation and to own a second home.

Its red rocks are famed for providing a beautiful backdrop for all. The area offers stunning flora, fauna and has a thriving community of locals wishing to preserve the area as it is.

In order to permanently prevent forest service land trades of forest land in the red rock country in exchange for land outside of Sedona, some feel an NSA designation is needed and can only be passed by an act of Congress.

More than 250 individuals showed up at the special meeting held at the Hilton Resort in Greater Sedona to hear the argument for changing the law.

Proponents for the NSA designation believe such legislation will protect their forests from future development indefinitely.

With tourism being such a large economic driver in the Greater Sedona/Verde Valley area it is important to preserve the environment and protect the community from any future mass development.

Wherever you stand on the argument, what is for sure is that the area is truly beautiful and deserves to be protected. We will see what develops.

Sedona Arizona Real Estate and Community: Presidents Day Celebrated by Sedona – Use Sedona’s Library To Find Out More!

February 12th, 2010 cault Posted in sedona No Comments »

American flag over Mount Rushmore National Memorial

Happy Presidents Day 2010 for Monday!

It’s part of history that effects us all – the third Monday in February is Presidents Day.

However, much confusion always arises over what the difference in the holiday is between Lincolns Birthday on February 12th and Washingtons Birthday?! Well, our great Library here in Sedona can help you out – it is always worth taking a trip to Sedona’s great public library.

The short answer to the presidents day question is that Presidents’ Day is an annual holiday observed in the U.S. to honor the nation’s Presidents, especially George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  It is celebrated on the 3rd Monday in February, which is also called Washington’s Birthday.  Many states adopted Presidents’ Day instead to honor not only Washington but other Presidents as well.

Sedona Public Library is a great community resource – right now they are also assisting with tax season! You can read our recent post here:

The first Library in Sedona was founded back in the 50’s with the present day library being opened in the 60’s. Library’s are no longer just for borrowing books – they act more as a community center. Offering a range of media, from books, to audio through to DVD! Library’s are an integral part of many communities. It is also host to many fun events!

Sedona’s Public Library is located at: 3250 White Bear Road Sedona, AZ 86336

Sedona Arizona Real Estate & Community: Tax Time Is Here! Sedona Library Can Help!

January 22nd, 2010 cault Posted in sedona No Comments »

Thinkstock Single Image Set

Yes, its that time of year again already! Tax season is upon us!

The income tax laws, schedules, and filing procedures have change dramatically since their inception and the Sedona Public Library can help! The Library is a resource for tax law, the history of taxation (and the formulation of the IRS etc) but more importantly, it is the only place left that will give out forms! Naturally while all federal and state forms are available online:  www.irs.gov and www.azdor.gov, but if you do not use a computer then you will find it difficult finding the forms! Also in terms of instructional booklets, these are also thin on the ground.

However the staff at the library are there as a resource to help you find the information you are looking for. Also, an additional resource and service hosted by Sedona Public Library is its annual AARP Tax Preparers Service.  This service is indicative of SPL’s commitment to provide affordable and responsive community services.   The program starts February 2, and ends April 15, 2010.  The hours are 10:00 am to noon, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, in the library’s Si Birch Community Room.  The service is available to everyone; you do not have to be a member of AARP, and there is no minimum age requirement.  This service is free and naturally has a limited scope on what it covers in terms of preparation.

All in all these are reasons to get a head start and file early before it gets too late! Also, while mentioning tax, do not forget that this year the $8,000 first time homebuyer tax credit and $6,500 tax credits end later this year so make sure you purchase a home in the next few weeks!

Sedona Arizona Real Estate: State Parks in Arizona May Close

January 11th, 2010 cault Posted in sedona No Comments »

Desert highway

With 2010 there will be some tough decisions to be made – mostly due to the tight budget.

However, there is something which is being discussed which will effect Sedona and the whole of Arizona drastically!

On Jan. 15, the Arizona State Parks Board will be forced to make some tough decisions about the future of several state parks, and according to many the decisions are not “whether” some should close, but “which”.

With the state parks dwindling budgets – down $30 million to $19 million to now beloe $10 million, it is no surprise.

Our state parks do so much for residents in rural areas – by helping stimulate the economy – as well as preserving our heritage. It was announced in 2009 that Homolovi State Park has a $3.5 million annual impact on Navajo County economically, with visitors contributing $2.6 million directly into the local economy. Statewide, the study found that state parks contribute $224.4 million to the economy, with $162.8 million spent directly at the parks, and the remainder at related and supporting businesses such as hotels and restaurants.

Here in Sedona, there is talk that the Red Rocks park will be one that will have to close – due to a $190,000 per annum loss.

Our state parks give us so much, so make sure that if you are in the area – take time to visit them and enjoy yourself! We need to make sure they stay open! Read our post – Sedona Arizona Offers Beauty, Recreation, Culture & So Much More!

El Prado by the Creek was established in 1976 and celebrates New Years’ traditions from around the world during the special Friday, January 1st hours of noon – 8pm – the gallery really is a big part of the Sedona Arizona art scene - a scene which has made the city a top relocation destination for those in the art world.

Sedona Arizona Real Estate & Community: ‘Tis the Season of Snow here in Northern Arizona!

December 15th, 2009 cault Posted in Sedona Community, sedona Comments Off

Monument Valley

Snow is something which many associate with the northern parts of the country as well as the midwest and northeast – however! We do get it here in Arizona!

In fact, parts of Northern Arizona get its fair share. Here in Sedona the chances are slimmer thanks to the areas microclimate. But the chance is still there. Recent storms have caused many problems in the region with snow and ice and even Oak Creek Canyon has been agreed to be plowed, so we have put together a handy dandy resource courtesy of the Arizona Department of Transportation for Drivers to “Know Snow” – their printable guide!

Remember, Weather conditions in Arizona can find you driving in sunny, moderate climates of the low desert to ice and snow of the mountain regions in just a couple of hours. So be careful!

Driving in snowy conditions actually starts before you leave home – is your vehicle in the right condition? how is your battery? brakes and heater? ADOT has a list of items you should check!

Checking the weather is something you may think is obvious, which is true! However in addition to your local TV and Radio station ADOT also produce snow maps so you can see areas which are usually effected by snow. That way if you are unfamiliar with the area you will not be caught surprised! Also, read up on ADOT’s anti-icing and plowing routes and how it works – that way you will be more informed on what to expect.

Finally, when you are driving always drive cautiously, keep the fuel tank topped off and take it easy – drive slow! As always, buckle up! See more tips here.

Sedona Arizona Community: Learn More About Verde Valley & Its Past!

November 25th, 2009 cault Posted in Oak Creek, sedona Comments Off

Red River rock near the Sedona

History is not the most exciting topic of conversation for most people, but when it comes to Sedona and the Verde Valley, its history is one of the most interesting stories you will likely ever hear!

Courtesy of the Verde Valley News there is a great article explaining the history of the area we know as the Verde Valley as it is today.

Like an elderly relative the landscape is there, willing to tell the story of its past to anyone who will listen. You just have to be prepared to peel back the layers of its past and “listen” to what unfolds!  In this case, it is a story which goes back not thousands, but millions of years.

In the case of the Verde Valley the white rock that is spread across the valley floor often fascinate many, well its origin is actually relatively easy to explain;  it is an ancient “lake!”.

The Verde Valley has been studied by countless geologists and the white rock extends 300 square miles and stretching in length from about 10 miles northwest of present day Clarkdale to about 10 miles southeast of Camp Verde. At one point it is estimated it was at least around 3125 feet thick!

The lake (dubbed Lake Verde) which covered the vast area expanded and contracted over millions of years before finally drying up around 2.5 million years ago.

It is definitely a fascinating story! You can read more here and here in the article.

If you are relocating to the area or even just visting its a piece of history which is worth reading about while you are here.

Sedona Arizona Real Estate: Get Out & Hike Secret Canyon Loop North of Sedona!

November 14th, 2009 cault Posted in Arizona real estate, Oak Creek, sedona 1 Comment »

What better activity to do at the weekend in Sedona than to get out doors and hike!

North and west of Sedona are a myriad of deep, meandering canyons as well as secluded forest trails that wind among towering, multihued cliffs, providing an exhilarating sense of isolation that’s tough to find on the more heavily traveled routes along Oak Creek Canyon and in the Bell Rock area.

However some hikers may find some of the canyons, such as; Fay Canyon, Boynton Canyon, Long Canyon and HS Canyon, to name a few, a little dull as they are “in and out”. So here is a great idea for this weekends hike: combine some of the canyons to create your own “Secret Canyon Loop” combining portions of different canyons and trails, for what can only be described as an exciting 5 hour 8.3 mile expedition!

Here is what Arizona Living suggests:

Start at the Secret Canyon Trailhead and hike north into the Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness. The sandy orange fairly level trail takes you through a typical Sedona landscape. Around half a mile from the from the trailhead, you’ll come to the trail into HS Canyon; stick to the Secret Canyon Trail.

About 1.8 miles from the trailhead, look for the signed junction with the David Miller Trail, which goes up and over a ridge between two canyons. This is a steep, and narrow, trail which is very scenic and only lightly used.

After crossing the ridge, the trail switchbacks rather steeply down into Bear Sign Canyon. To explore the canyon, look for the signed junction with the Bear Sign Trail and go northwest (left). The trail will get narrower, brushier and fainter as you proceed up-canyon. After about a mile or so, the trail peters out amid the brush and snags.

Return to the junction with the David Miller Trail and proceed southeast on the Bear Sign Trail. As you cross and recross the bouldery creek bed, you’ll pass a couple of shallow rock overhangs. Look for the junction with the Dry Creek Trail about 2 miles past the David Miller Trail. Bear right and continue south about three-quarters of a mile to Forest Road 152 and the Dry Creek Trailhead. Follow the road as it winds generally southwest about three-quarters of a mile back to the Secret Canyon Trailhead and back to where you parked your car.

So get out there and have some fun in Sedona! Or, if hiking is not your thing, how about mountain biking!
