The Tavasci Marsh, the largest freshwater marsh (unrelated to the Colorado River) in Arizona, is a part of the Tuzigoot National Monument.  The marsh is designated an Important Bird Area (IBA) and is home to a large variety of bird species including the Painted Redstart, Greater Pewee, Magnificent Hummingbird, Common Black-Hawk, Western and Cassin’s Kingbirds, Vermilion Flycatcher, Summer Tanager, Abert’s Towhee and Lucy’s Warbler to name a few.  The Tavasci Marsh is spring-fed and has had many uses during its lifetime, from irrigated fields and cattle grazing to a flushing area for nearby Pecks Lake and an expanded use area for waterfowl.  Its varied use has created a need for restoring and managing the marsh to make sure that it will continue to be available as an IBA and will go into the future as a healthy wetland environment.  An Audobon program is underway to manage the restoration of the Tavasci Marsh and those interested can attend a presentation on Wednesday, November 19th at 7 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center of Sedona, 100 Meadowlark Drive (off Hwy. 179).  Call (928) 214-0415 for more information.

Visit Africa, without ever getting on a plane!

Just outside Sedona is home to Arizona’s best wildlife park. “Out of Africa” is home to over 400 different animals, many of course large mammals and even some exotic snakes!

This is a day trip to remember. Just 30 minutes south of Sedona in Campe Verde, this safari park offer so much to see and do that not just the kids will be amused, the adults will too! There is the Serengeti Safari, the giant snake show, the wildlife preserve tram tour and yes, you guessed it, Feed a Tiger! (for $3 each!) 

The park is open year round between 9.30 am and 5.00pm with free parking. Tickets are available online and cost $32 for adults (including tax - $28 seniors)and $20 for kids including tax. What a bargain! Annual membership is also available for individuals and families.

There are eateries available there with quick service food and guests can pet some of the more sedate animals there. Thankfully none of the 40 big cats!

Definately something fun for the family on a day off. Sedona and the surrounding area is home to such great activities.
