History is so fascinating! Yet many people are unsure about the local history of their town. In Oak Creek, Sedona, the area is now known for its gorgeous red rock formations that surround the area and make it a haven for high end resorts and spas. However the area was first known for its red apples, not the red rocks!

With the surrounding area being desert, the year round river at Oak Creek provided great irrigation for apple trees in the area. In fact, apple harvesting was one of the first real industries in Arizona. The climate is perfect for fruit trees - including peaches and apples. Slide Rock State Park for instance is still a working orchard. Over the years smaller homesteads who had their own orchards have made way for larger commercial operations.

Although despite larger commercial facilties, private orchards continue on a much smaller scale with people liking having fruit trees to provide their own supplies. Although perhaps with the growth in the interest in local produce, organic food and local farmers markets there could be a revival in growing your own fruit!
